teaching emotional intelligence activities

Did you know that by teaching children how to learn, we can boost their attainment by 7 months?

Are you a frustrated parent who wants their child to love learning, be motivated, and have a world of opportunity open to them?

Then you'll love our empowering and supportive student Wellbeing Mastermind for students in year 5 and year 6.

Discover a world where your child is confident approaching new and challenging problems, is self-motivated for their learning and resiliently facing this new exciting phase.

Most parents work hard to encourage, support, and guide their child to opportunities that will open many doors for their future.

Sadly, this can be met with hesitation, resistance, and a lack of motivation from the child. The pressure to support without putting too much pressure can put a strain on the parent-child relationship.

Many parents experience homework battles, children wavering from studies in the final weeks leading up to an exam, and big feelings being expressed in relation to the changes.

It shouldn’t feel like you’re dragging your child toward these opportunities

This is why our small group student mastermind is the perfect safe space for your child to become a resilient, self-motivated and confident learner, both within the classroom and beyond!

In fact, it’s the perfect way to ease pressure from the parent-child relationship as your child will learn to love the journey of learning and will no longer resent your nudge to get to work.

You have already done a fantastic job in providing them with all of the opportunities, now it’s time to help them become more independent and self-motivated with the help of our focused and intentional bi-weekly meetings.

5 reasons why our Student Wellbeing Mastermind is the perfect choice for all students in year 5 + 6

1. Learning lifelong skills for within and beyond the classroom

Our small group mastermind is focused on empowering students with lifelong skills in self-awareness, critical thinking, resilience and empathy. Each of these skills will serve them to thrive and feel confident in overcoming any new challenge; from moving schools, to preparing for exams and facing obstacles beyond the academic world.

2. Improve learning by 7 months!

With the guidance of Sarahlynn, the head tutor of Bettering Youth, children will learn explicit strategies to understand the learning process and grow as confident and independent thinkers. Our program is grounded in the knowledge that Meta-cognition and self-regulation can improve learning by 7 months. This has a significant amount of evidence from the Education Endowment Fund.

3. You want your child to be motivated to learn….

We want to help you, help your child! And one of the best ways we can do this is to ease the burden on you as a parent to have to nag and coax your child to be motivated. Learning about how to learn and self-regulation will improve the student’s motivation and encourage them to become more independent. This means no more homework battles and more time for creating fun memories together.

4. Social and intrapersonal skills improved

Among the many benefits our students will experience from our student wellbeing mastermind, the power of knowing themselves allows them to better relate to others. Independent learners can also benefit from positive social benefits like improved communication and conflict resolution amongst peers.

5. Skills for GCSE and Beyond

Many students are ‘tacit’ in that they simply accept if they know something or not. There’s no independent strategic thinking about how to learn it. Students who have worked with a Bettering Youth tutor can be considered “aware” “strategic” and “reflective” to varying degrees based on our approach to learning which teaches students how to learn. This program will dive deeper into explaining how to learn and provide more opportunities for students to become ‘reflective', and independent learners.

V did really enjoy the poem (The Raven). When I asked her about it she started reciting it to me! She said that it’s mysterious and really dramatic and is now her favourite poem. Was a very good choice!

I’m so glad that Z opened up and spoke to you! You very quickly leaped over the first hurdle! As you’ve probably guessed, he is quite negative and not very expressive. When he came out of his session with you and said it was “ok” that was massive! “Ok” to him is the same as “fantastic” to another child!

She is loving Comprehension Club – especially this term’s focus on Poetry. Thank you so much! She has sent her poems to her Nanny to read as she also writes poetry!

She came out of the session this evening and showed me what she had done. She said she really liked algebra so that’s a pretty good result I think!

Hi Sarahlynn, I would like to say that we are very happy that E got a scholarship and Northampton High School and would like to say a big thank you for teaching and encouraging her on obtaining her goal. She is very happy! Thank you so much.

Hi Sarahlynn, just to update you, * has been invited to interviews at Winchester and Charterhouse and we’ve just found out today that Eton have invited him too! We are over the moon. Thanks again for all of your help and support.

We are really pleased with how much the boys are enjoying the time with you. Thank you for your kindness and knowledge in helping them! It’s really wonderful to see how they are enjoying and being more confident with maths and also themselves!

Thank you for creating the Comprehension Club. My daughter really loves seeing all of her ‘club friends’ every week and I can hear her confidence really building as she explores these comprehension questions with you. It’s been a real weight off.

Just wanted to let you know that * has really been enjoying his recent English lessons with you. We haven’t been experiencing any of the usual difficulties with him which is a really good sign. He has a more positive attitude towards his learning which is great to see! Thank you so much for the wonderful ways you find to keep both of the boys motivated.

We just wanted to share that S has been awarded “most improved in English” award this year and we could not be more pleased! His work with you has boosted his confidence and dare I say, he enjoys English now!

Metacognition and self-regulation approaches to teaching support pupils to think about their own learning more explicitly, often by teaching them specific strategies for planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning.

Self-regulated learning can be broken into three essential components:

  • cognition – the mental process involved in knowing, understanding, and learning
  • metacognition – often defined as ‘learning to learn’; and
  • motivation – willingness to engage our metacognitive and cognitive skills. (1)

Meta Cognitive learning is deeply transformative and can boost learning by 7 months. It works because it empowers students to enjoy the learning process and become independent, motivated learners.

Using Meta-cognition and self-regulation as pillars within our masterminds, children will benefit from an intentional and impactful safe space to grow as confident learners and feel excited as they approach the many new challenges of being in year 5 and year 6.

While this may sound complicated and ‘boring’ - Sarahlynn prioritises learning that is fun and engaging. From hands-on activities to group discussions, writing activities, film critiques, physical activities, and more, your child is sure to be engrossed and engaged.

This programme is currently included in the academic tutoring support provided to all Bettering Youth students.
In January 2023, the Student Wellbeing Mastermind will be open to the public for 50.00 per half term. We also have a ‘Pay what you can’ scheme to ensure this is accessible to as many students as possible.

FAQs

What dates are the sessions?

The Year 5/6 student wellbeing mastermind will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, 23rd and December 7th from 7:30pm - 8:15pm

What if my child cannot attend all sessions?

These sessions are limited in number and will build on one another so we strongly encourage that all three sessions are attended. Should your child not be able to attend all three, please contact Sarahlynn so we can determine the best possible solution.

Will sessions be recorded?

Yes sessions will be recorded, however if your child cannot attend all three sessions, please contact Sarahlynn so we can come up with a plan so as many students as possible can be there to participate.

How can we log on to the Student Wellbeing Mastermind?

These sessions will be available via a private and encrypted Zoom link.

What will you be teaching?

Our mastermind is built on four main pillars: empathy, resilience, critical thinking and self-awareness. Through these pillars, we'll learn about meta-cognition and self-regulation. These two skills are important in boosting student attainment. Research shows that explicitly teaching these skills can improve student marks by 7 months! By teaching emotional intelligence activities, we're building confident, independent and self-motivated students.

How long are the sessions?

Each session is booked for 45 minutes. Please arrive 5 minutes early to allow for settling in. We will begin promptly at 7:30pm.

I have more than one child who is in year 5 or year 6, do they need to register two spots?

It's important that each child has the ability to participate with our interactive activities so we encourage a log in per child. However if this not possible, they may both show up on one device. Please register each child, so Sarahlynn has a record of student names.

My child is deregistered from school, may they still attend?

Absolutely! These sessions are a great way for home educated students to connect with peers in a fun and safe manner.

Still not sure and would look to chat more about it? Book a meeting with Sarahlynn
