SATs Open House FAQ

1. My child freezes during exams. How can we help?

A very common challenge! In our program, we teach students about the brain's anxiety response using simple metaphors:

  • Amygdala (Guard Dog) – Triggers the fight-or-flight response.
  • Hippocampus (Memory Elephant) – Stores information but struggles under stress.
  • Prefrontal Cortex (Wise Owl) – Responsible for decision-making and logical thinking.

When a child freezes, their Wise Owl shuts down, making it hard to recall information. We normalize this reaction and teach techniques to re-engage the prefrontal cortex, helping students regain focus and confidence.

2. My child is overwhelmed by homework. What can we do?

Homework overwhelm is common, especially as students adjust to increased workloads. Here’s how we help:

  • Explain the Purpose – When children understand why homework matters, their motivation improves.
  • Time Management Strategies – Instead of focusing on completing 20 math problems, set a timed study block to encourage focus.
  • Break Tasks into Chunks – Smaller, manageable tasks prevent overwhelm and increase productivity.
  • Develop Focus Skills – We teach techniques to maximize study time so children complete their work efficiently and effectively.

3. Can my child start SATs tutoring before Year 6?

Absolutely! We welcome students starting as early as Year 4 with the goal of building strong academic foundations and developing key exam techniques. While we won't push beyond their current year group, we will challenge them within their level to build confidence and mastery. This gradual, skill-focused approach ensures they are fully prepared by Year 6.

4. Will my child receive homework as part of their SATs tutoring?

As a general rule, we don’t assign much homework, especially in the younger key stages. Many schools already provide SATs-related homework, and we prefer to use our sessions for intensive, focused learning. Our priority is to maximize our one-hour sessions by practicing key skills, building confidence, and refining exam techniques.

5. Do you offer holiday courses or intensive programs?

Yes! We offer a range of holiday courses, including Easter booster courses, SATs workshops, and intensive retreats for more challenging exams. These programs provide targeted support in small groups or workshop settings. Get in touch with us early to secure your spot and receive personalized guidance on the best course for your child.

6. How do you support student wellbeing alongside academics?

We are passionate about blending academic support with wellbeing coaching. Our SATs tutors are trained in mental health and emotional resilience strategies. This ensures that your child not only gains academic confidence but also learns essential stress management and self-regulation techniques.

7. What makes Bettering Youth's tutoring approach different?
