      Course:

5 reasons why our GCSE Group Tuition is the perfect choice for all students in year 9 - 11

      1. Experienced Examiners

Our small group course is hosted by our GCSE specialist tutors whom also have experience as examiners.  They know their subjects and are confident in how to teach it to students to maximise retention and exam performance.

      2. Improve learning by 7 months!

With the guidance of Shola and Victoria, children will learn explicit strategies to understand the learning process and grow as confident and independent thinkers. Our program is grounded in the knowledge that Meta-cognition and self-regulation can improve learning by 7 months. This has a significant amount of evidence from the Education Endowment Fund. It's the perfect secret weapon in the lead up to GCSE exams.

      3. You want your child to be motivated to learn….

We want to help you, help your child! And one of the best ways we can do this is to ease the burden on you as a parent to have to nag and coax your child to be motivated. Learning about how to learn and self-regulation will improve the student’s motivation and encourage them to become more independent. This means no more homework battles and more time for creating fun memories together.

      4. Social and intrapersonal skills improved

Among the many benefits our GCSE Small group tutoring sessions, students will experience a learning environment that encourages effort, contribution and development.

      5. GCSE success and beyond

Many students are ‘tacit’ in that they simply accept if they know something or not. There’s no independent strategic thinking about how to learn it. Students who have worked with a Bettering Youth tutor can be considered “aware” “strategic” and “reflective” to varying degrees based on our approach to learning which teaches students how to learn. This program will dive deeper into explaining how to learn and provide more opportunities for students to become ‘reflective', and independent learners.

V did really enjoy the poem (The Raven). When I asked her about it she started reciting it to me! She said that it’s mysterious and really dramatic and is now her favourite poem. Was a very good choice!

I’m so glad that Z opened up and spoke to you! You very quickly leaped over the first hurdle! As you’ve probably guessed, he is quite negative and not very expressive. When he came out of his session with you and said it was “ok” that was massive! “Ok” to him is the same as “fantastic” to another child!

She is loving Comprehension Club – especially this term’s focus on Poetry. Thank you so much! She has sent her poems to her Nanny to read as she also writes poetry!

She came out of the session this evening and showed me what she had done. She said she really liked algebra so that’s a pretty good result I think!

Hi Sarahlynn, I would like to say that we are very happy that E got a scholarship and Northampton High School and would like to say a big thank you for teaching and encouraging her on obtaining her goal. She is very happy! Thank you so much.

Hi Sarahlynn, just to update you, * has been invited to interviews at Winchester and Charterhouse and we’ve just found out today that Eton have invited him too! We are over the moon. Thanks again for all of your help and support.

We are really pleased with how much the boys are enjoying the time with you. Thank you for your kindness and knowledge in helping them! It’s really wonderful to see how they are enjoying and being more confident with maths and also themselves!

Thank you for creating the Comprehension Club. My daughter really loves seeing all of her ‘club friends’ every week and I can hear her confidence really building as she explores these comprehension questions with you. It’s been a real weight off.

Just wanted to let you know that * has really been enjoying his recent English lessons with you. We haven’t been experiencing any of the usual difficulties with him which is a really good sign. He has a more positive attitude towards his learning which is great to see! Thank you so much for the wonderful ways you find to keep both of the boys motivated.

We just wanted to share that S has been awarded “most improved in English” award this year and we could not be more pleased! His work with you has boosted his confidence and dare I say, he enjoys English now!

      Our GCSE success learning process

Metacognition and self-regulation approaches to teaching support pupils to think about their own learning more explicitly, often by teaching them specific strategies for planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning.

Self-regulated learning can be broken into three essential components:

      • cognition – the mental process involved in knowing, understanding, and learning
      • metacognition – often defined as ‘learning to learn’; and
      • motivation – willingness to engage our metacognitive and cognitive skills. (1)

Meta Cognitive learning is deeply transformative and can boost learning by 7 months. It works because it empowers students to enjoy the learning process and become independent, motivated learners.

Using Meta-cognition and self-regulation as pillars within our small group tutoring sessions, children will benefit from an intentional and impactful safe space to grow as confident learners and feel excited as they approach the many new challenges of GCSEs.

While this may sound complicated and ‘boring’ - our tutors prioritise learning that is fun and engaging. From hands-on activities to group discussions, writing activities, and more, your child is sure to be engrossed and engaged.

This programme is currently included in the academic tutoring support provided to all Bettering Youth students.

          About Shola

          Math tutor Shola

When it comes to maths students may often struggle with the subject at school because of misconceptions that are particular to them, and difficult to rectify in a whole class setting. This can lead to the student losing confidence. I deliver One-to-one sessions. This is an excellent way to address these misconceptions enabling my student to re-connect with their enjoyment of the subject.

I specialise in tutoring students of all abilities in the following areas: foundation to higher GCSE maths, and general maths tuition for key stages 3 and 4.

Lessons are tailored to my students by further developing their understanding of mathematical concepts as well as delivering lesson based on current needs and upcoming course materials.

My role as Head of Year means that I oversee the  pastoral support of students in my year group so that learning at every level of the individual is supported. I am a qualified Designating Safeguarding Lead Level 3 which means that I have practical knowledge and skills to protect the welfare of students and to take action when necessary.

          About Victoria

          KS4 English tutor

          Visual + Interactive Learning

My teaching style responds to the needs of the student but I am a big fan of using visual stimuli to help support learning and creativity, as well as breaking down tasks into shorter activities.
As well as teaching I have also written and curated content for ed tech companies so I also like to incorporate high quality video into my lessons to help bring English literature texts and background historical context to life.

          Experienced AQA Examiner

I am also an experienced examiner for AQA so I always like to ensure that every lesson relates clearly back to the content and format of an exam. I am also a curriculum mapper for a number of Ed Tech companies so understand the power of a great resource to unlock learning.

          Dyslexic Tutor

I am experienced working with students who are autistic, have dyslexia, ADD and spent some time at a National Autistic Society school, gaining experience which I am eternally grateful for.

          SEND tutor

I am also committed to supporting neurodiverse learners to achieve their full potential and have been very successful with this client group. Prior to teaching I worked in a counselling and advice background which I bring to my approach of nurturing the whole person while also focusing on results.

          LGBT+ Inclusion

As well as teaching I have also been a pastoral lead for LGBT+ inclusion and I am a committed ally to trans and gender non-conforming students as I believe children learn best when they feel safe and accepted.

If any of my approach sounds helpful for you then give me a message.
